After lunch—poppy seed bagels with cream cheese—and the usual discussion/argument about which way to go from Noah’s Bagels, we find ourselves cruising up and down Pacific Avenue like we always do, as Phil points out. We pass by the dark man, his hateful guitar and deep, intrusive voice. He recognizes me and begins his usual tune, crowing about beauty, burritos, and blue shirt. I feel like hurting him sometimes, wishing I could snap my fingers and his mouth would disappear.

The main street in Zippoland can only be as silent as a cricket; it is late, and the night life thrives indoors. The buildings appear as a shadowed blue, due to a bright moon, and windows betray the silence.
I am the last to leave from work, and I adjust my jacket and blanket of trademark hair as I step into the fresh night air. The silence is filled with my swearing when I damn my forgetfulness and realise I have to turn off the Refrigerator Movers sign flashing ever so obscenely in the night air.
